So I've had an exchange of e-mails with Stephen Jones about the collection of Leigh Brackett stories he edited for the Fantasy Masterworks series. When I sent my initial query to an address I found on his website via Google, I mostly just wanted to know whether the novel Sea-Kings of Mars in the collection was the original magazine version, which was later published as a book in an apparently somewhat different form under the title The Sword of Rhiannon.

Jones replied in the affirmative, and as we went back and forth a bit, I poked around on Google some more and began to realize that he has quite a bibliography under his belt and has won a lot of awards for his anthologies. I realized I had even read an interview with him before, regarding his work on the Conan volumes for Fantasy Masterworks. Pretty soon I started feeling that I was corresponding with somebody substantial, and I began to fear that he thought I was just some dim drooling unsocialized fanboy looking for someone to suck up to. How could I impress upon him that I was a person of no small consequence myself?

"Do you know James Bacon?" I wrote this morning. "Irish fan now living in London? I've written a review of the latest Brackett collection from Haffner Press for a fanzine he's doing."

"Yes," he replied, "I've met James."

Mission accomplished!

Oh, wait, hold on! Am I trying to make myself feel important by telling people I know James Bacon? Shit. Oh well, maybe we should call him James "Kevin" Bacon from now on.
