Last night I caught a ride with
juliebata and
holyoutlaw to the Clarion West party at
akirlu and
libertango's far-flung house in Kent. This was the first of this year's parties I've been to, and I didn't go to any last last year. Haven't been to any of the readings in the past couple of years either. I was beginning to feel cut off from a part of myself, and the party last night reminded me that there are people I pretty much only see at Clarion West events. Like Nisi, for example, who seems to be making quite a name for herself these days. And like Leslie, for another example. Had a nice chat with her about various aspects of the Seattle science fiction scene. I tried to explain Corflu to her, but she does not grok fannish fandom. She told me I had to come to the Chuck Palahniuk reading in a couple of weeks.
Although I mostly talked to my old pals and co-conspirators, I did chat briefly with a couple of this year's students. They all looked bright and shiny and full of hope and energy. Connie Willis was the teacher last week, so she was there making shit up, as science fiction writers do. (She told the brother of one of the students, "Your brother has been a real trouble-maker. Did you know he stole a car last week?")
I had a blast. Maybe I'll go to the one at
jackwilliambell's next week. Felt like I had reconnected to an important circuit in the old social circuit board.
