Painful QOTD

Randy Byers reports on “The Floating Worldcon” – mentioning Sharee, his lady friend, whose photo I printed in my Anticipation account (she is that memorable).

-- Guy Lillian, review of Banana Wings #40 in The Zine Dump #25

Sigh. Yeah, that's the problem! Goddamn memories!

Maybe I need to watch Porco Rosso again.

Godblessed memories! Gotta love 'em!

Oh, alright. You win! I love my memories!

Of course, now would be a good time for us to remind ourselves of the epigraph to Antiquities.

You're probably closer to a copy than I am at the moment, and I can't find the epigraph in my memories. So what is it?

.

We say that to console us for the loss of Paradise

God gave to us alone among all his creatures

Hope and Memory. We might rather say,

Only because we are creatures burdened with

Hope and Memory do we intimate a Paradise

which we alone have lost.

Well, that's one to chew on, for sure.

Gave me a chuckle, that did.

It reminds me of this, source lost and probably paraphrased:

Man is the only animal for which existence is a problem to be solved.

I recognize that quote -- gave me a chuckle too. And I prefer your paraphrase (which I just now misspelled as parapharse aka parafarce!) to the original:

"Man is the only animal for whom his own existence is a problem which he has to solve."
-- Erich Fromm

But then I was glad to find a corrolary Fromm quote, which will no doubt drive Randy and me batshit (not that we're not already batshit):

"Love is the only sane and satisfactory answer to the problem of human existence."
-- Erich Fromm

Fortunately there are different kinds of love!

More than there are kinds of snow, and almost as readily yellowed!

Well, memories turn yellow too, like photographs. Gives them that faraway nostalgic look.
