I bet it looks great on the big screen. The cinematography is beautiful, and the use of landscape would be an interesting thing to analyze all on its own.
Agreed about the genre-hopping. He reminds me of old school Hollywood directors like Michael Curtiz that way. (Curtiz probably comes to mind because I also watched his noir, The Unsuspected, over the weekend.)
