I use an antique (looks like home-made casing) lab-type 24-hr. clock timer (errr.. liberated from one of the science greenhouses at the Arboretum when I worked there), into which I've plugged a lamp with a bright incandescent bulb (florescent ones don't work well with it). I suppose such plug-in-an-appliance clocks are still made (probably with settings more accurate than to the half-hour), and could be used with radios or various types of record-players, for people who aren't deaf.
