Alarming

So for over two decades I've been using a bedside phone+radio for my alarm clock, but it's finally getting to the point where the radio reception is off unless I'm physically touching the casing. Since I use the radio for my alarm, it's irritating as hell. In the meantime we've gotten ourselves a trio of cordless phones for the house, one of which is in my room, so I don't really need a bedside phone anymore. What I need is a radio that I can use as an alarm. Or am I stuck in a conceptual rut with this idea? I ask my Friends for advice. Any cool alarm devices I could use to replace my ailing system?

We use a JBL On Time clock radio/iPod dock/mp3 player speaker.

Ours is this generation:

but there are now several different versions available.

I find that hungry kitties work well for that.

I have an iLuv clock/radio/iPod dock. It's like this but an older model. In general I like it. What I don't like is the radio station selection is analog, the backlight on the clock is bright enough to keep me awake, and the switch for turning the backlight down/off is wearing out. What I really want is a mini-stereo with separate speakers that has a relatively small control unit designed to work as an alarm clock.

I've got a clock-radio with a built in CD player that I picked up on eBay when my previous clock radio became unreliable. I wouldn't recommend the particular model, because the controls are really counter-intuitive, and the CD player has gone tits up, but I do like the idea. I've also been giving some thought to switching over to a retro-styled straight up alarm clock -- the L.L. Bean version of the Art Deco Moon Beam alarm clock.

I use an antique (looks like home-made casing) lab-type 24-hr. clock timer (errr.. liberated from one of the science greenhouses at the Arboretum when I worked there), into which I've plugged a lamp with a bright incandescent bulb (florescent ones don't work well with it). I suppose such plug-in-an-appliance clocks are still made (probably with settings more accurate than to the half-hour), and could be used with radios or various types of record-players, for people who aren't deaf.
