That photo certainly does capture the screen (a cloth one, not stretched taunt, apparently) excellently well.

IIRC, this is a shot of Dietrich in bed with a sort of mosquito netting around her. That's the scrim that this is shot through. Part of the effect is that the focus is on the netting rather than on her face.

Yup, and it's an evocative Effect, but I was thinking more of the (punning) aspect of the thread title -- it's a great shot of the screen/scrim/mosquito-netting, with the rouge empress vaguely (albeit interestingly mysteriously) in the background.
