That is SO FAR from what normally is excerpted as an image from My Neighbor Totoro I didn't even recognize it. Very cool!

I'm just glad he didn't pick the shot of the Catbus where it's apparent that Catbus is male.

Hm, I hadn't noticed that yet. Don't the girls refer to Totoro as a he as well?

I'm pretty sure that, at least in the English subtitling, they do refer to Totoro as "he." I'll ask Andy (he's studied Japanese) what they say in the Japanese audio track.

As far as Catbus. Well, there's a shot where he's jumping over our perspective and, if you've seen "Totoro" as often as i have (or if you slow down the video) it's pretty easy to make out the fuzzy little Catbus testicles.

I love that kind of earthy touch to Miyazaki. There's something so comforting about this movie.

If you ever watch Pom Poko (and you should), scrota are all over the place.

That one is Studio Ghibli, but not Miyazaki?

I see now that Miyazaki is credited with the idea for the story. I also see that it's about tanukis, which I believe are Japanese raccoons. I know the word from Seijun Suzuki's Princess Raccoon (Operetta tanuki goten), and I just noticed last night while rewatching part of Nausicaa that the evil princess calls her councilor "tanuki", which is translated in the subtitles as "You sly fox."

This was another one I thought of posting:

One of my fave flms, yet I did not recognise the scene.

It's from the scene where Mei gets lost. She runs into this goat, and it wants to eat the ear of corn she's carrying for her mother. I love how it looks like a monster. From her perspective, it is one.
