Mississippi
Sep. 30th, 2005 08:31 amReceived word from my sister today that she's back from her short stint with the Red Cross in what ended up being Brookhaven, Mississippi. She writes, "It was a good experience and I would do it again. I spent the entire 11 days in Brookhaven, Mississippi. All but one day I was working at a Service Center where we interviewed clients from Louisiana and Mississippi. The interview was part of the process that ended in a check for the clients. Met some interesting people and heard some of the stories. One day I helped set up a shelter for those displaced by Hurricane Rita." She reports that she and the other volunteers stayed in an old house and slept on cots. "The house was airconditioned to the point of my freezing and the shower was outside."
I haven't heard anything from my mom, who flew to Biloxi on the 22nd.
Meanwhile, the barista at the Cafe Allegro informs us that her friend Molly, formerly of Biloxi, has moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia. Isn't that another hurricane zone? Oh well, if she'd moved up here, it would have been into a major earthquake zone.
I have the growing sense from reading about the aftermath of Katrina that we are witnessing a diaspora that will change the face of the country in a lot of subtle ways. America absorbs the bayou ...
