Clarion season
Jul. 15th, 2006 09:31 amLast night I made it to a Clarion function for the first time this year -- a party for Nalo Hopkinson at
kate_schaefer & Glenn's house. The party was hopping!
On arrival I sat in the backyard with
jackwilliambell,
marykaykare, and
juliebata for a while eating cajun and curry popcorn and talking about shoes, writing, beards, the big fire down the street, and the climate of various states. Greg Bear stopped by and complained that because he sold his first story at age fifteen, he never had a proper shot at the Campbell award.
davidlevine fact-checked with
intelligentrix regarding obscure but vivid details of New Orleans.
I decided to go check out the scene on the front porch, but had a hard time getting there. First on the back porch Leslie Howle wanted to let me know that Lucius Shepard might be coming to the party for Ellen Datlow next week and that I should come keep him company. She also introduced me to Nalo briefly and tried to explain Chunga to her. Leslie worked at the SF Museum until recently and was really impressed by Andy's piece on the museum in Chunga 11. She said she gave photocopies of it to everybody at the museum.
I eventually made it as far as the kitchen, where John D. Berry demanded to know where his copy of #12 was. We later learned that it's in the mail. Meanwhile we gossiped about Graham Charnock, who is traveling with the entire Charnock clan to Seattle and San Francisco in early September.
jerrykaufman,
svtompkins, and I smoffed mysteriously about TAFF for a bit, ending when I cut Jerry from our mailing list (while keeping Suzle on it) due to deeply felt political differences that could well plunge all fandom into war in that special way that TAFF has.
hank wondered if he'd yet sent me the link to his piece on Custer movies at Hollywood Bitchslap. He hadn't, but I'd found it myself via a link to HB at Greencine Daily.
Finally out on the front porch, I found Mr. Hooper and Mr. Gonzalez behaving in a predictably dissipated fashion. I was on my fourth Grimbergen Double Dark Abbey Ale by that point. (Yum. I really like that beer, and their Blonde Ale too.) Victor and Tamara are getting married next month, for those who haven't heard. I believe they said they've moved the date to August 19th, but don't quote me on that. Victor spoke of woodworking and his new job serving eviction notices. When Leslie left with Nalo, she had us give her a copy of Chunga 12. I only wish I'd thought to mention that Carl Brandon is one of our idols too.
Good party. Guess I've been summoned to the next one too.
