So the drugs didn't end up solving the problem after all. Yesterday they performed a procedure called a cardiert, which my mom describes as a nice way of saying that they stop the heart and start it again. Obviously this is a pretty serious, scary thing to go through, and my dad signed a living trust saying that he didn't want heroic measures taken to keep him alive if he was going to be severely incapacitated afterwards. Mom reports that "the first thing he says when he wakes up and sees me is 'well, guess I'm not in heaven'." Lippy family I have!

Mom was extremely angry, and rightly so, that first a doctor told her he thought Dad would be going home that day but needed to check with the cardiologist who had done the procedure, and then nobody got back to her for three and a half hours after that. Finally a nurse asked if she knew that Dad was staying in the hospital another 24 hours for observation. Well, no, actually, and fuck you very much. Mom filed a complaint with the hospital liaison department. The doctors probably got distracted by other problems, but that left Mom and the rest of us stewing on our anxieties. Well, I guess everybody has it hard, huh?

Anyway, apparently the cardiert got the heart back into the right rhythm. Let's hope it stays there. Both Mom and Dad were actually more than happy that he would be staying in the hospital for further observation, just to make sure it would keep ticking as desired. Mom seems to be doing okay and is telling us she doesn't need anyone to come hold her hand. "It'd just be another person I'd feel I needed to take care of," she told my brother. We'll revisit that idea if Dad continues to have problems.

FURTHER UPDATE: Mom writes, "Yep! He's home! He immediately took a shower and is now parked in front of the FOX channel. So he is already back to normal. :-)"

I sure hope they can kick back and relax for a while. That's enough crisis for now, thank you!
