Renton-fried chicken
Feb. 10th, 2008 08:56 amSo yesterday the undercapitalized co-editor and I traveled south to Renton to run an errand. No, it wasn't a visit to Fry's, although now I know how to get there without touching tire to I-5, so I may return to pick up a scanner. We did make a quick stop at the Dog and Pony, which is a very nice pub in downtown Renton. I can't say I know what downtown Renton used to look like, but I can say with some confidence that it doesn't look like that anymore. Massive, transformative construction projects are underway all over the place, including an absolutely monstrous condo or apartment building very much on the scale of similar projects in South Lake Union. Somehow I always picture Renton as being at a distance from the lake, but I guess that's because the times I've visited before have been up in the highlands (where, for example, Jimi Hendrix's grave is). The lakefront is still kind of an industrial wasteland at this point (including the all-important Boeing plant), but I can imagine that developers are slavering over the possibilities. I believe the Sonics (the local professional basketball team) were looking at some property along the lake in Renton before the team was bought by Oklahomans who want to move the franchise to Oklahoma City.
Anyway, we did head up into the highlands as part of our complex maneuver, and carl suggested we stop for a bite to eat at the Ezell's Famous Chicken up there. I was very pleased at the chance, not only because I was starving but because I've somehow managed never to eat at Ezell's all this time, even when they still had a place on the Ave. It was just as finger-lickin' good as I've always heard.
So it was an interesting trip all around. Construction cranes all over the place in Bellevue, too, but I'd read about that. I had no idea that Renton was exploding as well.
