Saw the latest Jean-Pierre Jeunet film at the Egyptian last night with [livejournal.com profile] holyoutlaw. I love Jeunet's films, and I've seen all of them except Alien: Resurrection (1997). This one seemed the least of the ones I've seen, although it was still a lot of fun. There's much to laugh and cheer about in this tale of the lumpen proletariat's revenge on evil corporate arms dealers. (How French!) Jeunet's love of elaborate Rube Goldberg devices and old-fashioned toys is well on display. A junkyard becomes a playground, somewhat reminiscent of the aesthetic of Delicatessen (1991).

I suppose the reason this seemed a lesser effort is that the main character, played by Danny Boon, isn't very charismatic despite his interesting condition. Also the story structure seemed pretty ramshackle, with a romance with a contortionist seemingly tacked on without much development. Still, there's Dominique Pinon to mug it up whenever a distraction is needed. When invention lags, you can always fire Dominique Pinon out of a cannon for some laughs and thrills. Two evil corporations are destroyed by a crew of lovable eccentrics, and for the moment we can ignore that the system hasn't been changed thereby. It's a summertime lark, with the requisite Parisian piss joke.
