I Am Love (Io sono l'amore, 2010)
Jul. 10th, 2010 08:34 pmHoly cow. The best movies are like dreams. This movie is a sensual dream of love, sex, death, and rebirth, told in florid, yet elliptical melodramatic mode. It follows no rational logic, but dream logic. I think I liked this even better than Winter's Bone, although it's apples and oranges.
Yeah, I don't know what to say. Lush, overripe, ambiguous, stark, luscious, angular, hot, distant. Great score by John Adams (who composed the minimalist opera, Nixon in China), very fitting to the silences and crescendos of the film. A diva role for Tilda Swinton, as others have said. She's just brilliant. It's an avant garde art melodrama. I don't know what it is, but it took me by the throat. Took me back. It made people in the audience laugh because they didn't know what to feel.
