New horizons in spam
Apr. 15th, 2012 10:54 amI use Akismet to filter spam on my film blog, and it's gotten to the point where I barely look at what's in the spam trap before I delete it. Today I looked more closely, and I have to say that I'm impressed by a couple of these, both referring to the post about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Here's the one from the cleverly-named Nada, purporting to be a reply to ![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)

What's interesting about this is that it knows what the subject of the post is (as opposed to most spam, which is entirely generic even when it's coherent) and even says something nearly substantive (e.g., "it's a whole lot more procedural"). Is this a sign that there's so much commentary on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo out there that it's worthwhile to take the extra step of seeming to actually comment on it? Here's part of the message from "Mario", purportedly in response to Steve Green's comment:
This has absolutely nothing to do with what Steve wrote, but it still sounds like an actual comment on the book. Maybe this stuff is copied from an actual discussion somewhere? Maybe that could even be automated. Look up another reference to the subject-line and copy and paste some text.
Aha! So I googled that text from "Mario" and found a post on a blog called Fizzy Thoughts. Fascinating. Now I'm curious how Akismet spotted this as spam. Was it the address it came from?
janetl's comment:I didn’t get the cold impression you did, but I think that has to do with lnntesiig to it on audio. I was so entangled in it emotionally in what happened as well. The way I remember the names being used differently is that it depended on the point of view of that character at the time or their attitude about her. That is pretty interesting, though. When I re-read this in print (oh, and I will), I’m going to pay attention to that to see if there is a pattern or not. I have about 35 minutes left on The Girl Who Played with Fire and I’m really enjoying that one, too. It’s different than the the first in that it’s a whole lot more procedural. You learn a whole lot more about Lisbeth in it. Can’t wait to see how it ends although I have it on a good source that not much is resolved. ACK!!!.-= Literate Housewifeb4s last blog .. =-.

I think Lisbeth was able to sleep with Mikael for two reasons: she had her revenge and because she really had a detached opinion of herself. Not exactly low self-esteem but an ability to step outside herself and keep things that happened to her separate from who she was. Do you know what I mean?I read this book in August and still haven’t written the review because It’s such a complicated book with disturbing themes that you can’t talk about without giving away the story.
