My mother, an avid movie goer in the 30's and 40's, once commented that as Hollywood got bigger and the studios more powerful [I'd call it industrialized], all the humor was wrung out.

She also said that the Depression demanded humor, while the War made it seem wrong. She commented on "Some Like It Hot" that it was almost funny -- like a stew that someone a couple too many ingredients and the balance and flavor was off.
