The formation of the studio system is fascinating, and something I hope to learn more about. I mentioned Maurice Tourneur, who was a French director who came to the US with Pathe (a French company) in 1914. (There's still a Pathe building here in Seattle, which I guess used to be a local distributor.) He first made movies in Ft Lee, New Jersey, which was one of the hotbeds of movie-making in the US before Hollywood took off. Eventually he started making movies in Hollywood. In 1926, he returned to France after writing a letter to Variety (I think it was) complaining about the studio system and its growing emphasis on producers and movie stars. He felt he would have more independence as a director back in France. So yeah, industrialization is probably a good description of what happened, and it only took about a decade.
