Getting the year started right
Jan. 1st, 2008 07:59 amIn a few hours I'll be driving up to the Vancouver airport to meet Sharee, who is flying in from Australia via Taipei. As I mentioned a month ago, she's coming to BC to spend time with her mother and will be visiting family in Edmonton too. She'll also be traveling in Central America and Mexico, returning to Australia at the end of February.
It's been two and half years since we last saw each other, so there's some uncertainty to be negotiated. I can't actually think of a better way to start the new year. In fact, I decided to take it easy last night so that I would be clear-headed today. Still, it was strange to be awakened this morning at 7am by someone from Expedia wanting to tell me that the family reservations in Cozumel in March have been changed. Why me, O Lord? Ah well, the truth is I was already half-awake, pleasantly considering the fact that it was less than twelve hours until I see her! We thank you, Australia, for your bounty.
2007 was a tremendous year for me. The peaks were my niece's wedding, where I rocked the mic as Rev. Ramdu, and of course the bloody Hugo. Other highlights were Pat Virzi's awesome Austin Corflu, the family trip to Costa Rica, and, above all, making new friends here on LJ, outside my usual fannish social circle.
I don't know what the year ahead will bring, and I am as irresolute as ever. Well, I know I owe one of my favorite British fanzines an article by the beginning of March, and then there's the family trip to the Yucatan at the end of March. There's the Corflu in Vegas in April (better make reservations soon!), and maybe the Worldcon in Denver this summer. We have material on hand for a kick-ass issue of Chunga. I'm teaching myself how to use Publisher as I work on another issue of Way. I've been thinking about taking up drawing again -- something I haven't done since college. (That's most likely an idle threat.) There's a growing stack of scientific romances and scientifiction to read and a growing stack of silent movies to watch.
In fact, I'll be taking H. Rider Haggard's She with me to the Vancouver airport, where I'll probably have time to kill. The first time I flew to Cairns, Sharee met me wearing a shirt that said She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed. I always enjoy a nice bit of symmetry.
And so let it be it resolved: Happy New Year!
