Washington State Supreme Court Justice Richard Sanders has written an op-ed piece for the Seattle Times: "Attorney General Holder: Hold Bush administration accountable". Note that Sanders is an anti-abortion, anti-gay rights conservative. He gained some notoriety last November during a speech by then-US Attorney General Michael Mukasey before the arch-conservative Federalist Society when he shouted, "Tyrant! You are a tyrant!" (At which point Mukasey collapsed on stage, but probably not because of Sanders' verbal assault.) In the op-ed piece, Sanders says we are a nation of laws, not of men, and that laws were broken by the Bush administration. He specifically warns against allowing "national security" to be used as a trump card against the Constitution. It would be nice if there was a lot more pressure from the right on this issue. I am hugely skeptical that there will be any honest accounting of crimes committed in the name of national security.
