I got nothing. You got anything for me?

Update: Has Crythology!

Corflu Zed Rah!

Dunno if you've heard yet, but I hear there's a rather spiffy convention on near you this weekend. Plus, if you can't attend in "meatspace," there's a Virtual Con Suite available at http://www.corflu.org/virtcon.html

Sounds like the Charnocks will only be attending virtually this year, alas.

And I've just received a non-virtual copy of Virtual Tucker Hotel, which has generously found room to promote TAFF.

Incidentally, does "Meatspace" have a vegetarian alternative?

A little good news, plus the final work on Are You Still Here?, my TAFF project for Corflu.

Great news on both fronts! Will you be posting a PDF to efanzines?

From: [identity profile] stevegreen.livejournal.com
My aim is to have it with Bill sometime tomorrow. It's up to around 24pp, which is fairly shocking.

Great, well if I can manage it I'll try to print some copies for the convention.

Date: 2009-03-09 07:39 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] stevegreen.livejournal.com
That's awfully kind. Given the size, though, maybe just a couple of reading copies? Can't have you bankrupted by my verbiage.

Date: 2009-03-09 07:44 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] randy-byers.livejournal.com
Yes, well, if I can print a few on my own printer, that should at least stall bankruptcy until I have to buy more toner.

Too kind, sir.

Unbelievably, we already have three dinner parties lined up for our Corflu trip (Thurs, Fri, & Sat).

Hey, what are you, popular or something?!

Maybe more like desperate not to be abandoned?

More and more these days, I think it's a good idea to make specific dinner plans ahead of time for a convention. Of course, I say this as the beneficiary of such advance planning. ;>

From: [identity profile] alces2.livejournal.com
I have never done advance planning for a dinner. I have eaten alone a number of times. Admittedly some restaurants are not for me, say, like BBQ. Actually in Las Vegas I went alone to a raw vegan place for lunch one day and another place that had a fair number of vegetarian meals. The first place was good. I ate there with someone at an earlier Corflu in LV. The other place was just fair. I did have a good Thai dinner with a group one evening though. I also had a breakfast alone although I did talk with a certain [livejournal.com profile] fringefaan. I like dinners with other people but I'm no conversationalist, more often than not. One day maybe I'll figure it all out. Then again, probably not.

BTW, I'm really glad to hear that you're going to make it to Corflu Zed after all!

From: [identity profile] alces2.livejournal.com
Thanks for that. Unfortunately I've caught a cold and it is supposedly a horrible cold so we will just have to see how I am on Saturday morning. I was actually hoping to keep my appearance quiet but the Corflu staff is far too diligent and notices things. Admittedly I suppose I can't fault them for that. Oh well. Is there a good liquor store near the hotel?

Date: 2009-03-10 04:43 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] randy-byers.livejournal.com
Well, I promise not to pester you too much at the convention! Just enough. There are a couple of liquor stores pretty near the convention. Probably even walking distance, except for people with colds. If you're looking for high-end single malt, however, you might need wheels to get to the one in the University Village. Are you coming Thursday or Friday? Or?

Date: 2009-03-10 05:02 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] alces2.livejournal.com
Nah, I just wanted to see if I could surprise anyone. Actually I have tickets for a chamber concert on Friday night which is why I initially canceled. Then I saw flights were pretty cheap so I figured what the heck, I'll come up really early Saturday morning and fall asleep during dinner. Assuming my cold doesn't prove debilitating, I will arrive from the airport in a rental car.

Date: 2009-03-10 05:10 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] randy-byers.livejournal.com
Ah, okay. Well, University Village will be a good option then. We can discuss directions when you arrive, if you don't find it with Google before then. Pretty straight shot from the hotel.

Date: 2009-03-10 05:22 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] alces2.livejournal.com
Is University Village the name of the liquor store? The car will have NeverLost. I've used that before. It isn't, IMHO, as good as Garmin, but should get me wherever.

Date: 2009-03-10 05:35 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] randy-byers.livejournal.com
No, University Village is the mall that contains the liquor store. It's due west on 45th from the hotel. If you don't want to deal with a mall (and a yuppie mall, at that), there's another liquor store due east on 45th, at the intersection with Stone Way. It's lower rent, so doesn't have quite the selection, but that's usually where I go. Although right now I'm drinking something called GlenDronach that I got from the duty free shop at the Canadian border.

I was happy to hear on the news this morning that Obama is willing to let some of the big banks die.

Date: 2009-03-09 07:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] randy-byers.livejournal.com
Aha! I haven't checked my usual news blogs yet today. That sounds very promising on the face of it. God, what a mess Wall Street is. So much fraud. I hope some heads are going to get busted eventually.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up.

From: [identity profile] stevegreen.livejournal.com
This is the kind of "heads up" the bankers deserve.

How 'bout a Squid Pie?

(Offered here in case you didn't click through when you saw it over at my place.)

Then there's Obama overturning the Bush policy on stem cells and also signing "a presidential memorandum establishing greater independence for federal science policies and programs." Sounds good to me!

“PIE DOESN’T HAVE TENTACLES!”

Now I'm sorry that Andy has promised that we won't pie the Corflu GoH this year.

And yeah, the science community must adore Obama.

Yeah. I also liked "Is that a squid in our shower?" and the rest of that conversation.

Congrats on the Can Haz Crythology! And wait 'til you see what Michael Dobson is bringing....

Well, that certainly piques my interest! I know that Curt Phillips is bringing a fanzine too, and I believe the Fishlifters will have an issue of Banana Wings.

Yes: Are you coming to the Quiz tonight?

When do fellow Brit's arrive for Zed?

Date: 2009-03-09 09:21 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] randy-byers.livejournal.com
No, I won't be able to make it the quiz again tonight, or probably for the rest of the month. Next Monday is post-convention teardown, and the Monday after that I'll be in the Dominican Republic.

First Brits (and Aussies) arrive tomorrow. No plans yet, but I'll keep you posted.

I'm in the Bay Area until Thursday night, but I can/will be around at the Weekend.

Well, we have a unofficial gathering Thursday night in the hotel bar, so you might want to swing by, depending on how late you get in. Don't know if you saw that we have a special Saturday-only membership rate of $25, too.

Date: 2009-03-10 08:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] daveon.livejournal.com
I will probably swing by then.

Date: 2009-03-10 08:52 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] randy-byers.livejournal.com
Just FYI, we've said we'll show up starting around 7pm, and we'll start stuffing membership packets around 8pm. We've also got the offer of a member's room in case people want to continue the festivities elsewhere.

Not for you, sir, but I have a small pile of stuff for the Corflu auction sent up from the Potlatch auction.

Date: 2009-03-09 10:53 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] randy-byers.livejournal.com
I heard rumors of this at the pubmeet. Did you by any chance bring something from Allen Baum back from Potlatch?

Date: 2009-03-10 04:28 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kate-schaefer.livejournal.com
I think so, but at this point I don't remember which thing in this pile came from Allen and which came from somewhere else. I'd better make sure the whole pile is stacked in an appropriate place.

(Kate goes and looks)

Oh. I believe the book Allen handed me is this one: The World of Fanzines: A Special Form of Communication, by Fredric Wertham, M.D.

That Fredric Wertham.

By comparison, the other stuff in the stack is dull, though it does include a book of racy Vargas pinups and the first-day covers from Iguanacon.

Date: 2009-03-10 04:45 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] randy-byers.livejournal.com
Ooh, well, that all sounds very interesting, actually. And yes, the Wertham is what I was expecting from Allen.
