So I stopped by Cellophane Square on my lunchbreak today. I picked up used DVDs of Jean Cocteau's The Blood of the Poet (Le sang d'un poète, 1930) and John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China (1986). Both were tagged $12.99. "I know for a fact that that's mistagged and should be $6.99," the guy behind the register said about Big Trouble. Well, gosh. Mille grazie!

That was after I'd said, "I've heard a rumor ... "

"That we're going out of business?" he said.

It's true. June 27th is their last day of business. He said, "Those of us who've been working here for years have seen a slow decline in sales that's typical for the whole industry, which is going down the tubes because of downloading. But in this economy ... Since January the decline has been precipitous."

They don't have a blow out sale going yet, but I would assume that they'll do it in the last week.

is it my imagination or have you been writing a lot recently about local businesses closing down? I'm wondering if the GFC is really biting in your part of the world.

To be fair, this is the second time I've written about Cellophane Square, but then again I haven't yet written about Puget Sound Reprographics, although partly because I don't know yet what's happened to them.

Annnnd if you were expecting a blow out sale right before they close, you would be wrong. They close saturday. I was just in tonight. No big sale. They are giving "deals" at the register, but it's nothing to knock my socks off (it was maybe an extra 10%, 15% off?). Granted, i nevertheless did spend (what for me is) a chunk of money there, but, i dunno, i was hoping for something a bit more ... well, blow out -ish.

Still, i picked up many things tonight i wanted -- lots of "greatest hits" of various bands and the soundtrack to "Latcho Drom" (i didn't even know there was one!). And i might still go back tomorrow or saturday to pick up a few more things.

And we *totally* scored last friday:

Wow, that ought to keep you busy for a while!

Curious that they aren't having a blow out sale. I wonder what they're going to do with the leftover stock? Well, I was hoping to get the new PJ Harvey album, but I'm not going to be able to get up there before they close. (I went last Friday to see if the expected sale had started yet. Hmph.)
