Saw Public Enemies with [livejournal.com profile] holyoutlaw yesterday. It was surprisingly nice to see Johnny Depp playing a serious, naturalistic role again. He was good, too. Very charming as the folk anti-hero, John Dillinger.

The movie wasn't half bad either. Shot in high-def digital video, and definitely at times playing on the you-are-there feeling that video gives. Why does video have that effect? Is it because we associate it with live TV news footage?

It's totally because of video's traditional use for news and live TV events such as sport.

I was also noticing this effect recently when my nephew showed me the first live-action Transformers movie. I wasn't even sure whether it was shot in video or whether my parents' new high-def TV was improperly calibrated and removing the film grain, but the visual experience was surprisingly immediate and jolting, like news footage from a war zone, even with computer-generated robots running around looking completely unreal.
