Good interview at Slant with the director of The Hurt Locker.

I've been wondering if she might win an Academy Award for Best Director for this one. Incredibly, it looks as though no woman has won a Best Director Oscar. Not many have even been nominated. I'm seeing Sofia Coppola (for Lost in Translation), Jane Campion (for The Piano), and Lina Wertmüller (for Seven Beauties). Is that really it? Pretty amazing, and not in a good way.

I was on the verge of being apoplectic that something could have possibly beaten out "The Piano" (which was painful and excellent), but then i checked to see what won that year.

On the other hand, Wertmüller lost to the director of Rocky. I've never seen Seven Beauties, so I have no idea whether it's any good.

I've inflicted my Kathryn Bigelow/Strange Days story on you before, yes?

I don't remember, so even if you have, I could stand to hear it again.

It would be fun to find out of it was intentional on Warnke's part. What would the auteurists think?

Isn't it the job of an art director to get the director's back?

Meanwhile, it's the producer's job to stab the director in the back.

I linked your page to Lucius...his early recommendation of The Hurt Locker is what sent me to see it.

Oooh looking forward to reading that later today. And what about black directors? In other words, how many directors that weren't white men have won the Oscar? SHAMEFUL Academy asses!!! Bigelow won't win, sadly. Those kinds of film never win. It will be some big industry guy.

Yeah, I remember what a big deal it was when Halle Berry won for Best Actress a few years ago. I suppose you're right about Bigelow, although it does seem as though this film has been promoted as a prestige picture. But I'm clueless when it comes to reading the Oscar tea leaves.
