From Abel Gance's silent film, La Roue (1923), which I've never seen. Screen capture taken from the Flicker Alley DVD by DVD Beaver (Gary Tooze).

Even taken as black and white photographs, these recent captures you've been posting are amazing.

I think partly it's evidence of how good the transfers for even standard DVD have gotten. The clarity and detail really are amazing.

I saw some of the remastered Chaplin films a couple years ago and was blown away by their richness. All the subtlety of shadow and tone you'd expect in a classic b&w photograph was in those films originally, but there wasn't a trace of it left in the degraded versions we grew up on--not even in the actual film versions I saw at the Silent Theater in Los Angeles when I was a kid.
