Going a bit crazy on the Latin music still. Latest downloads: Lola Beltrán, 12 Grandes Exitos Vol 1 ("La Reina de la musica ranchera," a Mexican singer I first heard in a Almodovar movie); Omara Portuondo, Buena Vista Social Club Presents Omara Portuondo ("this is melancholy music, not your high charged son montuno or salsa"); Bebo & Cigala, Lagrimas Negras ("a summit meeting between Ramon “Bebo” Valdes, the Cuban grandmaster pianist/composer/bandleader, and Flamenco vocalist Diego Jimenez Salazar “El Cigala.” One of the reasons this disc works so wonderfully is that Bebo, the relatively young one, at 35 years of age he is 50 years Bebo’s junior, has an old soul. You honestly can’t tell there is an age difference, in style or temperament, between the two"); Ojos de Brujo, Techari ("The rousing guitar of Ramón Giménez and sinuous, Moorish-tinged vocals of Marina 'la Canillas' Abad are wreathed in handclaps and percussion, plus scathing brass charts, remarkably creative scratching, beats and other electronic embellishments.")

Beltrán's music is called ranchera, which means ranch. Mexican country, I guess. Sounds similar to mariachi, to me, but what the hell do I know? It's a whole new world of music.

I'm also finding more Latin music in the MP3s I already have on my computer, including a cover of "Killing Me Softly" (in Spanish) by Omara Portuondo, from an album called Rhythms del Mundo: Cuba, which appears to be a benefit album with lots of rock acts (e.g. Coldplay and U2) playing Latin music. I have no idea how this arrived in my system.
