Just acknowledging that I've taken down my previous post, which was just too damned needy for words and unfair to the Fishlifters to boot. Sorry about that. It was one of those days, I guess. I blame humanity.

I blame humanity and all the passengers.
But it was a good post. Sorry to lose it.

When I read that you had taken down your post, I wept openly.

Which means that I didn't get to post my reply to your reply. It was, "You have no idea..."

btw -- Needy is just fine now and again.

My only concern with the missing post was that it looks like Banana Wings isn't on eFanzines.com, which bummed me out!

PS -- there may have been lots of discussion that happened after the last time I saw it.

No, they're not. They have made a conscious decision to keep their fanzine offline; it's a paper fanzine with no web version, not even a sample. I've suggested to them that they should put a page on efanzines saying 'this is how you get Banana Wings'.

They'll happily send you a copy though (I can't remember if they ask for some stamps).

I just mis-read "paper fanzine" as "proper fanzine". Bit of a Freudian slip.

Follow-up: roads remained dry all the way to Lake Harmony, PA, where I am ensconced in the Pocono Inn and Resort for the night. 590 miles is enough for one day, especially one with a mid-day start and a client stop along the way.

This place is apparently a Ramada property. So much for being daring and choosing a non-chain accommodation in the hotel coupon book.

The grey sky over Ohio turned pale blue with interesting clouds. There were even 20 minutes or so of sunshine in there. I wish I could have packaged them up and sent them your way, but you will be glad to know I thoroughly enjoyed them as I continued driving east.

*sigh* Regrettablly, I only skimmed over that post, as a hasty first reading, and didn't save/archive the Friends thing while it was still up. Whatever second thoughts you might have had, it was A Good Post ... with the upper-case signifying "even better than usual".

Of course those of us who never saw it are now going to come up with elaborate ideas of what it was all about. But it's your LJ, your call.
Ta for Chunga by the way; got passed a copy on Saturday but have hardly had time to look at it yet. Just enough to spot my name naturally...
Come to think of it I've not yet read your expanded Worldcon report in BW yet. Which I really want to.

Believe me, whatever you imagine I wrote is more interesting than what I actually wrote, so count yourself lucky. Meanwhile, you should write a LOC to Chunga about your experience writing reviews for Attitude.

A LOC? Er, right, er, look! kittens!!
I'm amazingly crap at getting around to writing anything. JamesB was trying to encourage me to do something at the weekend; it always sounds like a good idea but I end up being congenitally lazy. I've still not written up the last bit of my Belgian trip for instance, and that was back in August. It's pathetic really.

By the way, I got a delivery of beer yesterday. A variety of stuff but quite a few from Mikkeller, including a couple you recommended a while ago.

From: [identity profile] randy-byers.livejournal.com
So get drunk and write a LOC! Did you get the "wild Belgian" Mikkeller? ("Wild Belgian" sounds like the punchline to a joke, doesn't it?)

I don't tend to write when drunk, apart from scribbled notes on bits of paper to remind me off stuff to write later which I never get around to as I don't tend to write when sober either. I may try drinking a bit and writing a bit later but I suspect if anything it'll be about Antwerp.

Yes, I got the "wild Belgian" one (It's Alive) and also a strong dark Belgian style one you mentioned (Monks' Brew/Elixir). Also quite a few single hop IPAs which I thought might be interesting to compare. Strangely I didn't pick up some of the stupidly strong (but expensive) stouts.

And while we're on beer (what a surprise); any views or recommendations for Lost Abbey/ Port Brewing? The same place is selling quite a few of theirs and they seem to have a good rep. Fairly pricey but I'm tempted to pick up a few to see what the fuss is about.

I highly recommend Port Brewing's Old Viscosity and Older Viscosity. I've had the latter only once, on tap, although I have since bought a bottle (very expensive) for my small stash. Old Viscosity is more widely available and is a blend based on Older Viscosity. Other than that, I've only tried their Santa's Little Helper Imperial Stout, but I don't remember a thing about it. That doesn't necessarily mean anything one way or the other, as stouts have to work hard to really bowl me over. (Whereas, say, an abbey ale or dubbel barely has to work at all.)

Lost Abbey I haven't tried much of. I tried one of their standard Belgian-style ales a couple of years ago and wasn't impressed, but recently a friend brought out a bottle of the Angel's Share, and it was awesome -- a truly great beer. I should try more of their stuff, although they do tend to be spendy.

They are selling Older Viscosity and I was a bit tempted but... Actually it probably is worth the money, sounds like the sort of thing I'd like. They have the Santa's Little Helper too which also sounds like something I could go for. Keen on abbey and dubbels eh? I can think of somewhere they make a lot of those.
(Though I sometimes suspect there are more Belgian-style beers made in the US than Belgium.)

The same mail order company also has Angel's Share but you can only get it as part of a mixed case of Lost Abbey beer. I definitely want to hear good things about them before splashing out on one of those. Actually I think the Older Viscosity is supposed to be part of a similar deal on a mixed case of Port Brewing but they seem to have it listed separately as well, despite saying it's only available in the case.

Hm, nearly time for another beer.

Yeah, about time to leave work and stop at the Big Time for a snifter of Old Woolly.

Have fun with that. I stopped off for a quick few on the way home myself. Now I've just opened a big bottle of de Ranke Kriek; not a full-on lambic though there's some in there. Tart, woody, lots of cherries... good stuff. Definitely seem to be one of the more interesting new-ish Belgian breweries.

Ah, de Ranke Kriek. Doesn't that translate as "rotting cherries"?

As was the Old Woolly, of course, although I also got buttonholed by a passing acquaintance who talked my ear off, including the lately de rigueur trashing of Obama. I'm getting really, really tired of that, and I'm beginning to regret that I have any opinions on the matter myself, because I seemingly can't stop myself from expressing them. I just wanted to drink a damn beer in peace and quiet at the end of a difficult week.

Wait, am I ranting? Um, sorry about that!
