It's a pretty sweet scene, with some very sensible philosophy and advice. Funny that I didn't remember it at all (or the artist character) from my first viewing of the movie. All I remembered was the sense of flying, really.
I must see that movie. I borrowed the DVD of Porco Russo from the NESFA Library, so it's not that there's no Miyazaki in the house, but your Image of the Day just tapped something in my heart. Maybe it's the night sky, maybe it's the trees, maybe it's the way the wings look as if they're knit in variegated stockinette. Maybe it's the faces, the colors, the whole. Sensawonder and heartstrings all in one. Oh, yes, I must see that movie.
It's a total sweetheart of a movie (definitely a coming-of-age story), but I should mention that the image above is of a painting made by a character in the movie. The visual style of the movie is much different, and much more like Miyazaki's normal style. Porco Rosso was the next film he made after this one.
