Took Christina and Doug to Brouwers last night for one final outing before they head to the Bay Area this morning. This was the one chance they had to see John D. Berry, who had been out of town over the weekend. carl also joined us, bringing a CD he wanted to pass along to Doug, who is also a fan of rare and strange music. John had a "fanzine" that consisted of a deluxe pamphlet on typography, which he traded for a copy of C&D's Head!. I told them how much I loved the piece by Pete Crump in that issue (#9) -- an account of making an amateur film for a competition, written in the form of a screenplay -- and they told me I would probably be meeting him at Novacon.

That was sort of the theme of the night, for me. I had started getting maudlin yesterday about how they were going to be leaving, but then I realized I'd be seeing them again in November. I can wait till then to get maudlin. Nonetheless, it seemed appropriate that the sun came out upon their arrival on Thursday, and this morning the skies are grey and damp. You Bay Area folks treat them well!

Meanwhile, Brouwers had another lovely sour stout on tap: Snipes Twangzista. Hadn't heard of Snipes before. Google tells me it's Snipes Mountain Brewing in Sunnyside over on the Yakima Valley Highway. Hm. Well, another reason to be cheerful, with such beers in the world.

(It's not really a video, you can have it in the background.)

I actually don't have Flash loaded on my work PC (I'm sure Steve Jobs would approve), so this'll have to wait until I get home.

Ooops. Well, a hint, then: It's Ian Dury and the Blockheads, "Reasons to be Cheerful, pt. 3"

Which I'm pretty sure I have, and is probably why the phrase occurs to me.
