Just got word from Ted White that rich brown died this afternoon at 1pm. It seemed almost inevitable after the previous message from rich's daughter, but there was still hope while he clung to life. Farewell, Dr. Gafia, you were a force to be reckoned with, and a greater Trufan than I.

Twenty years ago, rich was the first person to welcome me to Corflu 3. After talking for a bit, he told me to stop by the Corflu table the next day — he wanted to give me a copy of The Enchanted Duplicator. Even though they were for sale, rich wouldn't accept my $2.00. He'd seen a spark; it needed to be a gift.

Four years later, at Corflu 7, rich approached me about the possibility of working on Science-Fiction Five-Yearly. I talked with Jeff; we were both interested and rich promptly handled the introductory correspondence with LeeH.

I'll continue paying rich's gifts forward for the rest of my life. I'm so sorry his has ended.

I don't know what to say. I only interacted with rich via email, and that started slightly rocky, but I respected the hell out of him and the three LoCs he gave to the Drink Tank were among the best.

I wish I'd had the chance to meet him. He'd said he'd tell me the story of the time he and Arnie won the mini-golf game if I ever ran into him. I wish I'd had the chance.

When I was new on Usenet, 13 years ago, rich was one of the rasff writers I appreciated the most; always there to share his views and more than a bit of fan history. Sigh.

Friends die, cattle die; there's one thing that never dies: the fame of a dead man.

I'll miss him, although I never met him.
