Glenn Kenny's Best Films of 2010
Dec. 16th, 2010 02:26 pmIt's worth reading the comments on the original post (and he's added two more films since he first posted this), but I'm also going to repost his list here. I'll bold the ones that I've seen.
1) Carlos (Olivier Assayas)
2) The Social Network (David Fincher)
3) Everyone Else (Maren Ade)
4) Bluebeard (Catherine Breillat)
5) Toy Story 3 (Lee Unkrich)
6) Black Swan (Darren Aronofsky)
7) Wild Grass (Alain Resnais)
8) Fish Tank (Andrea Arnold)
9) Shutter Island (Martin Scorsese)
10) Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (Edgar Wright)
11) Greenberg (Noah Baumbach)
12) White Material (Claire Denis)
13) Solitary Man (Brian Koppelman and David Levien)
14) Winter's Bone (Debra Granik)
15) Centurion (Neil Marshall)
16) Life During Wartime (Todd Solondz)
17) Inception (Christopher Nolan)
18) Ne Change Rien (Pedro Costa)
19) Hadjwich (Bruno Dumont)
20) The Ghost Writer (Roman Polanski)
So I've seen eight of the twenty. I'm interested in seeing the Assayas, Breillat, Aronofsky, Resnais, Arnold, and Denis, but don't feel much pull toward the rest (which is not a judgment and could be simply a product of ignorance). I suppose I should mention that I watched Toy Story 3 without sound on an airplane, so I probably missed a lot of important information.
At this point my best of 2010 list would be I Am Love and Winter's Bone, although there were plenty of other movies that I enjoyed, including all the ones on Kenny's list that I've seen, even the ones like Shutter Island or The Ghost Writer that really didn't add up for me in the end.
There's still a lot coming out in the next few weeks that I'm really looking forward to. Tonight
holyoutlaw and I are going to see Rare Exports, which is a Finnish family film about an evil monster Santa. Of course, I would choose that first over Black Swan and White Material, which are both also currently playing.
