Seen on a men's room stall in Schmitz Hall:

"The night is darkest before the dawn."

To which somebody had replied:

"No it's darkest at midnight dumbass."

What are they teaching in these places these days... It's always darkest about halfway through the night, which at this latitude is going to be about halfway from sunset to sunrise, which is rarely midnight, especially in our summers...

Too much? :p

I agree. Both statements are wrong. I guess I should have written below the second remark, "Who are you calling a dumbass, dumbass?"

Midnight is before the dawn. It's less dark after the dawn.

Okay, "Midnight *is* before the dawn" wins as best addition to the exchange. Perhaps with added "dumbass".

I've previously heard the original phrase as "it's always darkest just before the dawn" (to which the proper reply is, "no, it's always darkest just before it turns totally black"), so the omission of the qualifier in this case suggests the snary response.

I just double-checked, and the graffiti does say "just before the dawn." I got it wrong in my post, dumbass that I am.
