I am back from Reno, where I learned that I had once again suppressed Claire Brialey. Which is to say that Mark Plummer reminded me that at the Great Corflu Cricket Discussion earlier this year, Claire had just as much to say on the topic as [livejournal.com profile] grytpype_thynne. In revenge for my sexist mindlessness, Claire has won herself a Hugo. I'm proud of myself for not remembering it as Mark's Hugo (not that he doesn't deserve one himself). I'm pretty proud of Claire, too. She apparently doesn't need me to remember what she says in order to hit her marks.

Forgiving soul that she is, Claire allowed me to bring her rocket back to Seattle, where she and Mark will be visiting for the rest of the week. Apparently she is more forgiving than trusting, however, as she didn't give me the base as well.

Some close-up photos of rocket and base, if possible, please?

Well, maybe. A better photographer than myself would be helpful, but if the two pieces get unwrapped/unpackaged in my presence I'll do my best.

We might want to note here that John Coxon did not mention Cricket during his introduction and presentation of the Hugo for best fan writer. (Er, perhaps he DID, and I just couldn't hear him because I was hollering so loud?)

I think we've got three-quarters of a cricket panel for the next UK Corflu.

I didn't spot a cricket reference but I was possibly too distracted by John's variation of my surname. And then by the fact that he needed to say it again and apparently I needed to say something too.

Should have thought to mention the Test score, actually...

Claire did grin quite a lot when I told her how effectively we were thrashing India...

Was this before or after you handed her the rocket?

Four nil! Four bloody nil! Forget the minutiae of cricket (other sports merely THINk they have minutiae) and just imagine supporting a team your whole life whose capacity for failure is so profound that you'd actually have been pleased to find out they were throwing games for money rather than being genuinely inept and lacking in the basic skills required to play their game. I mean, like our perennially unpredictable and crap weather, a standard form of social bonding for my whole life in Britain has been to converse with people I've just met about the team's latest collapse and then they come up with this fiendish and wholly un-British scheme of being consistently brilliant and ruthless.

Fortunately, Arsenal look like filling this breach for me by having a crap season.

I've noticed that English cricket fans are walking around with a look of uncomprehending delight on their faces.

I've just remembered that one of the things I said when we were talking about this at Corflu was that an entire generation had grown up thinking that 'England-middle-order-collapse' was either all one word or a recognised tactic...
