I finally had the six-month lab tests for blood glucose levels. Six months ago I was warned that if in six months' time my blood glucose levels stayed up where they were, I'd be diagnosed as diabetic. So the good news is that both my A1c and fasting blood glucose levels are down from what they were six months ago. (And indeed my fasting blood glucose is down from what it was two years ago as well.) My doctor writes: "It seems like whatever the lifestyle changes, exercise, weight loss, nutrition changes you have been doing are working! Keep up the good work. Why don't we check these labs again in another 6 months."

Yay, team! Now let's see if I can keep up the good work. Or who knows, maybe even improve it.

Yay team indeed! I've been impressed and should start letting it inspire me to make more healthy choices myself.

I think it helped me a lot to have my mom's advice on how she was handling her diabetes, and hearing her talk about her dietary changes over the past couple of years.

I had a run in with my Doctor over my FBG which was just over 100, but my A1C stayed at 5.2... I've a check up in a week, and I'm curious to see where they are. My doctor friends here have some nasty things to say about what GPs are doing over Blood Glucose readings because they're under pressure to start treating things that used to be well within the boundaries of normal.

I do need to exercise and lose weight, which I find is always easy over Christmas :)

But I think your A1C is good, isn't it?

Yes that's perfectly normal. But my Fasting number was always high when it was taken which annoyed my Doctor a lot so she kept taking tests. And the worst I got for A1C was 5.6... All of them were normal.

Isn't it still the upper end of normal?

I think 6.0 is considered the upper limit of acceptable. I was at 6.0 six months ago and was down to 5.8 this time.

I'm not that sure. I thought 5.7 meant pre-diabetes, and 6.0 to 6.5 is good course of diabetes (Russian doctors accept it up to 7).

My understanding is that the threshold at which they'll diagnose you as diabetic has dropped in the past decade, and I'm guessing it's because they do want to intervene earlier now, for better or worse. But your numbers are lower than even my improved numbers, so if there's a problem it seems to me it could only be because they're going up.

Isn't it good news! Be careful anyway. My colleagues's mum first had it high on the background of another problem, and then high blood glucose went away with the problem. A few months later, however, she developed diabetes. She manages to keep her glucose at good levels, though.

Three years ago I was found to have a high waking sugar (although my body apparently brought it down to normal just when really high figures appeared after lunch). In a few months I lost about ten percent weight, and my condition improved greatly. Unfortunately,I put on the lost weight back, and the problems returned. The worst thing about me is that the harder I try to keep my blood glucose lower, the higher it jumps overnight. So I've had about a year of nightmare and depression. Now I seem to have found what to do, and the figures have been getting closer to what they were three years ago.Now I have to work with my weight again.

So keep up th egood work!

Yes, it's not easy, and for all I know I'll get diabetes anyway just because there's a genetic predisposition in our family. Best wishes for your efforts. Go, team!

With me, it's also hereditary. And with my English friend, it's even worse (
