24 Hours of 21st Century Orchestral Music

Somebody named Will Robin has put together a program called Symphomania for WQXR, and it's comprised of 24 hours of 21st Century orchestral music. Robin's introduction gives context for the program, which includes a number of composers and pieces of music that I've heard or at least heard of, but also many composers I've never heard of. I'm mostly linking to the program for future reference.

Not 21st century, but on the orchestral music front I've got a ticket to the Seattle Symphony on Thursday, when they'll be playing Jean Sibelius' Symphonies 5, 6, and 7 conducted by Thomas Dausgaard. As I've mentioned here before, the 7th has become one of my favorite pieces of music. I've heard the 5th and 6th as well, but I'm not as familiar with them. I'm really looking forward to this show.

Of the 60 composers, I've heard music by maybe 35 of them, and there's a few others whose names I know. Some of them I really like. Some I definitely don't. I won't say at this point which, though I've mentioned a few in my past posts. But I don't think it can be all 21C music, though most of it is, since the first composer played (at the bottom of the page) is Luigi Nono, who died in 1990.

This will be well worth listening to.

Good catch on the Nono. I wonder if it could be a piece that was completed by somebody else posthumously, but if so you'd think the somebody else would be credited as well.

I forgot to add that I'd go to that Seattle Symphony concert like a shot.

They've done the complete cycle of Sibelius symphonies plus the violin concerto, all with Dausgaard conducting.
