Thanks for that. I have memories of climbing over ruins as a kid (albeit not of Japanese planes), and even of corporal punishment; I don't expect either of those are allowed any more, at least around here.
I once, as an adult, had the opportunity to go snorkeling, in a lagoon in Hawaii, but I chickened out. But I'd never done anything like that as a child, and I expect you had.
One word in your vocabulary is also in mine: zoris for flip-flops. Is that Japanese? If so, my father would have picked it up during his Navy service there.
