Special Student

One of my jobs at the University of Washington is to manage the table of major and degree codes -- codes that are used for a variety of purposes by a variety of systems. Today one of the directors in Admissions came down to request a new code to be called Special Student and to be used for students who have been displaced by Katrina (isn't that special?). The president of the University had announced on Tuesday that we would be taking in some students from Tulane and other schools that are currently, well, under water or otherwise unable to function. The tuition will still go to those schools. There are a zillion logistical details still to work out -- not least that there isn't any room in the dormitories for more students at this point. But we have a code for them. We'll figure out the rest in the next days and weeks.

Aw, I'm really sorry to hear it! But it sounds from Dave's LJ like you had an amazing time at Burning Man. I'd love to make it out to Perth sometime, or maybe I'll see you at a Nat Con one of these days.

We're already welcoming evacuee students here at UW-Milwaukee, too: 16 confirmed as of yesterday, with more to come, from Xavier University, Tulane, Tougaloo College, U. of Southern Mississippi, U. of New Orleans, Dillard, and Delgado Community College.

That was quick! I was told that we've had over a hundred calls, but nobody has been admitted yet. Meanwhile, I've now set up a separate code for displaced graduate students. It sounds like medical students present special problems, but I don't understand all the issues.
