AUX FORAINS MORTS GLORIEUSEMENT POUR LA PATRIE 1914-1918 ET 1940-1945

I've been doing some writing about my trip last November, which may become a fanzine or something, perhaps the second issue of my perzine, Way. If nothing else it has been a reason to revisit various pleasures and oddities of the trip, including this statue of a clown with a sword in Brussels, which [livejournal.com profile] pingopark, [livejournal.com profile] reverendjim and I stumbled upon on our way to the Cantillon Brewery. It's a memorial to "fairground entertainers" (forains) who died (gloriously! for the country!) in the two World Wars. Strange, no? Brussels has some very disturbing artwork dedicated to clowns, dolls, and puppets.

Still not the most disturbing clown/doll/puppet we saw on our trip, in my opinion, but definitely odd. They're weird, those Belgians. Nice beer though. I wonder if the two may be related.

After enough of the beer, the weirdness seems normal.
