I've finally completed the first draft of an epic trip report about my travels in November 2010. It's sitting at 20,000 words right now. I've sent it off to five people for feedback. This has been a long process, but I'm happy to have reached this stage. Makes it seem more likely that I'll actually finish the damn thing.

AUX FORAINS MORTS GLORIEUSEMENT POUR LA PATRIE 1914-1918 ET 1940-1945

I've been doing some writing about my trip last November, which may become a fanzine or something, perhaps the second issue of my perzine, Way. If nothing else it has been a reason to revisit various pleasures and oddities of the trip, including this statue of a clown with a sword in Brussels, which [livejournal.com profile] pingopark, [livejournal.com profile] reverendjim and I stumbled upon on our way to the Cantillon Brewery. It's a memorial to "fairground entertainers" (forains) who died (gloriously! for the country!) in the two World Wars. Strange, no? Brussels has some very disturbing artwork dedicated to clowns, dolls, and puppets.

Brussels, November 2010

Belgium is, amongst many other things, apparently a center of European comics culture. This is celebrated in Brussels with a series of murals in the city center. I'm not sure which artist is being honored in this one, but I love how, despite the crappy photo quality, there are a lot of perspective shifts, trompe-l'œil, and palimpsests in this shot.

There's a lot of great street art in Brussels, and just a lot of cool design in general. Belgium also lays claim to being the source of art nouveau. This is balanced somewhat by an overabundance of scary clowns and puppets.

My God! It's full of lambic!

This is another shot from the Cantillon brewery in Brussels, this one taken by [livejournal.com profile] reverendjim. Have I mentioned that the visit to the brewery was one of the high points of my trip? Did I mention the huge, riveted (not welded), open-air, red copper vat in the attic where they expose their wort to wild yeast? Something I'd been hearing about for years, but it was still awe-inspiring to see this strange and beautifully-crafted machine of human industry, which results in such strange and wonderful brews.

And I am now back from Thanksgiving weekend in Oregon. My travels are behind me for now, although there are almost certainly trips to come in the next year -- three of them in the process of formation even now, including one to Corflu in Sunnyvale, California and one to Worldcon in Reno. This trip was fantastic all along the the long and winding way. It's great to be home. I need to get my head (and my routine) back on and maybe do some writing. For now I'll just post an "angsty album cover" photo, as Jim described it.

How is everyone? I suddenly feel like a stranger here! I need to get regrounded.

Here's another photo by Rob Jackson, taken at the Salutation during our Nottingham pub crawl. From left to right, it's Lennart Uhlin, Doug Bell, Christina Lake, Mike and Pat Meara, and me. The Salutation is one of the two pubs we visited that claims to be the oldest in England. It was full of old school punks, too.

Catching up with a bit of my backlog today. This is a stack of beer bottles at the Cantillon brewery in Brussels. Yes, the bottles are full of beer -- or of lambic, actually. It makes a nice abstract pattern, but considering the quality of Cantillon's product it's also a sight to make a grown beer-lover cry tears of joy.

This is a shot of me and the [livejournal.com profile] fishlifters at Novacon with a copy of our labo(u)r of love, Slow Train to Immortality, which was an anthology of British fanwriting from the years 1995-2009 that we produced for Corflu Cobalt earlier this year. Photo is by Corflu Cobalt chairman Rob Jackson.

I was supposed to fly back to Seattle today, but I only got as far as Vancouver. The Seattle flight was canceled due to some kind of accident at SeaTac. I haven't heard the details yet. I'm rebooked for a 8:25 flight tomorrow morning. Time to find the bar.

This is the second time in just over a year that I've had trouble getting out of Canada after a convention. I was stuck in Toronto overnight after the Montreal Worldcon last year.

I'm at [livejournal.com profile] gerisullivan's house in Massachusetts for the night. Tomorrow we head for Toronto and SFContario.

I'm having a blast so far. The trip to Belgium with [livejournal.com profile] reverendjim and [livejournal.com profile] pingopark was epic. Probably the peak was the visit to the Cantillon Brewery in Brussels where after the tour (which was very cool in itself) we timed things right and ordered the right kind of beer to convince the brewer to bring out a bottle of the 2008 Lou Pepe Kriek to give us a taste and chat for a bit about the cherries they use. Novacon was a terrific chance to meet many friends, and it's hard to pick out a prime detail. Perhaps the highlight was the elitist pub crawl that Mike and Pat Meara led on Saturday, with Christina Lake, Doug Bell, Lennart Uhlin, and Rob Jackson in tow, along with myself. We hit four pubs, including two that claimed to be the oldest pub in England. The Trip to Jerusalem is one -- a maze of rooms and passageways and chimneys dug into the side of a hill.

Back in Croydon, I took a daytrip to the pebble beach of Brighton with the Fishlifters on Tuesday, then a production of Cardenio in the evening -- a reconstruction of a play that was attributed to Shakespeare and Middleton. It's a tender, loving revenge tragedy featuring necrophiliac rape and a pile of corpses -- but a distinct lack of boiled heads, as Claire pointed out.

Well, I need to hit the sack before the road trip tomorrow. Geri has hatched mad plans for an All Worldcon, All the Time party at SFContario. We are trying to figure out how we will fit all the supplies into the car. Tomorrow is another adventure!

I'm finding my feet and cooling my heels in Croydon today. Just a few quick notes about our story so far. The [livejournal.com profile] fishlifters met me at Heathrow yesterday with a sign that read: 'Croydon fandom welcomes international travelling jiant Radny Byatt'. I asked if that made me a relative of A.S. Byatt, and they seemed to think so. After we dumped my stuff at their house, we made our way to a pub down the block called the Cricketer, where we met up with [livejournal.com profile] reverendjim and [livejournal.com profile] pingopark. Jim was wearing a 'Ride the S.L.U.T.' t-shirt. It's a small world, isn't it? There were some nice beers on tap, including two by Dark Star, but the other notable event for me was that I finally got to try Welsh rarebit. If it gave me strange dreams, I don't remember, because I slept like the dead last night -- for nearly twelve hours! Couldn't have anything to do with how much beer I drank. We also went to the regular Sunday pubmeet at the Claret, where I met some of the local group and drank a couple more lovely pints.

Today, as I say, I'm chilling my hills, waiting to meet folks at another pub this evening. Ciao for now.
