I'll be at Westercon on Friday and Saturday. Friday night I'm helping out with the London in 2014 party (co-hosted by Westercon 66), and otherwise I'll just be hanging out. Hope to see some of you there!
Oh [I sigh with pleasure & regret] there was a time when The 4th of July meant WesterCon to me, and either I was there (most likely) or was bemoaning not being able to go. Now... I wasn't even consciously aware that it was in Seattle this year, and it's been a while (about a decade, maybe) since I'd have thought seriously about attending if it were more than an hour's drive away from home.
So, have fun (I expect that you will), and good luck with convincing modern-day fans that UK fans are worth cultivating, and that some UK Conventions are worth attending.
Actually, at the moment, I'm remembering Miriam Knight's agonizing about increasing the cost of WesterCon Attending Membership for the one she Chaired from $2 to $3, because she _really_ didn't want to discourage impecunious student fans from attending. And the fact that "Con Suite" then meant the two adjoining rooms in which the ConCom/Staff slept (briefly) and from which they operated the convention (and where you might, if you knew them -- as practically everyone did -- be able to score a softdrink or a beer from the bathtub).
Ha! I think you've just outed yourself as an Old Phart, Don.
Westercon has never been a convention close to my heart, but I'm not sure why not. When I first came into fandom, I went to most of the ones that were held in the Northwest, but I think I've only been to one outside my home region -- 1987 in Oakland, which was a memorable trip for me, although not necessarily because of the convention. I'm actually thinking of going to the one in Sacramento next year because of who's running it.
Anyway, I haven't even been keeping up with Northwest Westercons lately, but I was asked to help out with the London in 2014 party this year. Now I'm looking forward to it in a way I hadn't anticipated. We'll see how it goes.
