I'm back from my trip, and I'll probably write about it later. In the meantime I'm posting pictures of the memorial plaques that Seattle Vanguardians sponsored for the benches at Loncon 3. Due to a logistical cock-up typical of conventions, especially an enormously complicated one like Loncon, these plaques weren't deployed until Sunday, but it was still an immensely moving experience to finally sit on the bench and remember old friends. I'm not sure how many other benches there were, but there were a lot more familiar names on the rest.

I apologize for the poor quality of the pictures, but the plaques are currently in possession of Jerry and Suzle, who will be bringing them back to Seattle for all to see. The current idea is that we'll permanently attach them to a new bench that will live at Andy and Carrie's house, since they host so many fannish parties these days. However, this is a matter that's still up for discussion.

In case it's too hard to read, the names on these memorial plaques are: Anita Rowland, Anna Vargo, F.M. 'Buz' Busby, Chris Bates, Dave Clements, Heather Wright, Joanna Russ, Michael Scanlon, Octavia S. Butler, Sharon Baker, Scott Scidmore, Sharma Oliver, and Bob Doyle.

Many thanks to Farah Mendlesohn for organizing the sponsored benches for the convention.

I don't go to Vanguard parties much anymore, but on Saturday it was at [livejournal.com profile] janeehawkins's, which of course is a nostalgia trip for those of us of a certain age. So I put on my Vanguard disguise (a.k.a. the clothes I'd been wearing all day) and headed on over. Amongst other things, it allowed me to return the DVD of Jerry Springer: The Opera that I had borrowed from [livejournal.com profile] roadnotes (thanks again, it was brilliant!), and to bring some of [livejournal.com profile] jimtrash's Tiny TAFFzines and some TAFF ballots, which Jane had promised to flog because she was so entertained by the Tiny TAFFzines I had mailed to her. It was a pretty small party, with many notable figures Missing In Action (no Jerry & Suzle, no Andy and Carrie, no Ulrika and Hal), but I guess that's not unusual these days. Although Frank (of Frank & Molly) said that the last one they hosted was quite a bit bigger, so I guess it still waxes and wanes. Jane had just taken a course in soldering at a maker space on Capitol Hill and has become fascinated with the 3D printers on offer there, so she showed some videos of the printers in action and showed off a few objects that had been printed on them. Very cool! At some point five of us retired downstairs to smoke a little smoke. There was a time when the smoking room would have been full of people madly puffing away on various smokables, but that would have been a time when I still smoked cigarettes, which I don't really miss. Actually I don't remember seeing Jane smoke any tobacco this time, so now I wonder whether she's quit too. Well, it was great to chat with [livejournal.com profile] kate_schaefer and [livejournal.com profile] jackwilliambell just like old times, and there was John D. Berry and Vonda McIntyre and a number of other familiar faces, as well as one new person who came with Janice Murray but left before I got a chance to talk to her.

So that was the old tradition, and a very pleasant tradition it was. On the new front, I have now walked to SIFF Uptown in Lower Queen Anne three times on the weekend to see a movie. It's about three miles from our house and takes me an hour. So far I've always walked there via Westlake and Mercer (always running into a crowd entering or leaving the opera house), then I return home by climbing up and over Queen Anne on Queen Anne Avenue, with a stop at the Hilltop Ale House for a pint and a shot of Crown Royal along the way. The last two times I've done this, I've gotten to the area early enough to eat something in one of the restaurants near the theater, have a coffee at Uptown Espresso, and read a book. Yesterday I was reading Diana Wynne Jones' Hexwood, which is certainly weird and intriguing and very meta so far. The movie I saw was Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder, which was the one 3D movie he made and was being shown in that format. Anyway, this new tradition is a fine thing, and I hope I can continue with it, although it depends on SIFF continuing to show movies I want to see. They've been on quite a roll lately. I can't remember how long ago SIFF acquired the Uptown, but they are really turning it into something special for film freaks. One nice thing about this new tradition is I've gotten to know both Lower and Upper Queen Anne quite a bit better than before. The upper parts have always seemed like an island on top of the world, isolated from the rest of the city because you never go through it on the way to anywhere else. Never say never, because now I've found a reason to pass through and to stop at the local watering hole to read a few pages and observe the local wildlife. All in the service of getting more walking in and thus maintaining some semblance of health. Life is good.

I mowed half the lawn yesterday, and it was the back half at that, so the neighbors still have to look at a jungle out front. I'd already spent an hour pruning the raspberries and rebuilding the raspberry frame, so just half a yard of mowing heavy, wet grass was enough for me. It feels as though this was pretty late for raspberry pruning, and I'm not sure if that's because I've been so busy doing other things or because it really has been unseasonably chilly this year. I just have not felt like getting out into the yard this year, whatever the reason. On the other hand, this is not at all late for the first mowing of the year. I think it almost always happens in April, because it's too wet before then.

I also got a lot of writing done this weekend, both on my blog, on LiveJournal, and on the trip report, which I finally got back to after two weekends off. It has been very interesting working on a longer-form piece (circa 15,000 words at this point), which is not something I've done much of. I've been making notes in the manuscript of places where I want to expand or add more detail, and indeed yesterday was spent expanding on what I'd written the day before. It feels like I'm composing both forward and backward -- that as I move forward I'm changing my idea of what I've already written. There's lots of anxiety around the process, but there's also a lot of feeling of discovery, which is the fun part of writing. I've also got a lot of thoughts about the blog-so-far, but I think I'm going to resist analyzing for a bit longer. Perhaps needless to say, my thoughts about why I'm doing it are changing.

I went to Vanguard Saturday night. I hadn't been planning on it, but Craig Smith asked if I could give him a ride, so I thought what the hell. Turned out to be a relatively big Vanguard, perhaps because it was also Andy & Carrie's 25th wedding anniversary party and Julie & Luke's 5th wedding anniversary party. It was fun, even with the traditional ritual where Victor tries to talk me into buying an Apple product. Even Jane showed up, which was good to see. I drank a series of beers from Russian River Brewing tracing my spiritual path: Redemption, Damnation, Salvation. Out of order, but that's the story of my life.

Post-party

Well, the party seems to have gone well enough. Nobody died, at least that I know of. People brought a lot of great stuff. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] juliebata for the cupcakes (there's only one left), and to whoever brought the smoked salmon and the huge container of fresh strawberries. There are still massive amounts of beer in the fridge, and I now have an extra lighter. The party even spilled out into the backyard, because some people were feeling too hot inside. We didn't have enough chairs, as usual, and only this morning did I realize that I never deployed the two chairs from the kitchen. D'oh! [livejournal.com profile] scarlettina and I realized that we were practically neighbors, and I also talked to another woman who lives nearby and who praised my raspberries. (The new canes are growing like topsy.) There was a young woman from New Jersey who had been flown out by Amazon as part of a writing competition. It was a good crowd. Did I mention there weren't enough chairs?

Haven't had a chance to debrief with Doug and Christina yet, but they seemed to be having a good time. They got a ride back to their hotel in Victor's beemer. They're going to come hang out with me in Fremont later, and then it's the pubmeet at the Pub at Third Place.

Next weekend it's the Solstice Parade and a tiki party for somebody's birthday. The weather is beautiful again today. Feels like summer is almost here. (Probably an illusion.)

Just a reminder that Denys and I are hosting a party this coming Saturday starting at 8pm. The original reason for the party was that British fans Christina Lake and Doug Bell will be in town and want to see people, but in the meantime no venue was found for Vanguard last weekend, so this will be doing double-duty as the Vanguard party this month. Please come, and please bring chocolate. Or fruit. Or Japanese taro eyeball candy. BYOB. Etc. We'll provide a kitchen that everybody can crowd into at once.

If you need the address, send me e-mail. My e-mail address is on my user's info page.

It seemed somewhat smaller than September's party. It never reached that moment when the kitchen was wall-to-wall people and cacophony. Still, it was a good group, and thanks to [livejournal.com profile] paulcarp for bringing some friends. They seemed to fit right in. Thanks to him for the Negra Modelo, too. And thanks to [livejournal.com profile] farmgirl1146 for the box of organic garlic that she grew on her very own farm.

Despite the lower turn out, the basement smoking party continued until after 2am. It may have even been 3 before I finally kicked carl and Scott out. I'd say that I'm too old for this shit, but I'm actually feeling halfway decent after two cups of coffee. Not that I'm moving real fast, mind you.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] juliebata for bringing the quiches yesterday. It was a delicious dinner for the harried hosts, and a good party favor for the hungry hordes. It was all et up.

Vanguard has been going on for over 25 years, and last night's edition made me nostalgic. Remembering when we used to dance at Vanguards, remembering people before they got married, before they stopped drinking, remembering people who used to go to Vanguard but have moved away, drifted away, run away, or who stayed away this time because it was at my house. Yet there we were, still joking, still laughing, still driving each other crazy with our obsessions, still comforting each other for our losses, still yacking about the latest book we've read, movie we've seen, museum we've visited, weird thing that just happened. Hail, hail, the gang's all here. Still tons of fun after all these years.

Party!

Well, the house is ready. Where *is* everybody?

I don't know that anybody reads this journal who might be interested but isn't subscribed to the vanguard-disc list, but FWIW Denys and I are hosting the Vanguard party on Saturday. This is a monthly party for science fiction fans in Seattle that has been going on for over 25 years. The party starts at 8pm, and we're at 1013 N 36th St, just down the street from the Fremont Troll. Feel free to stop by! BYOB. Mars needs women. Hexapodia is the key insight.

Some of y'all might enjoy the short (3:08) video that Graham Charnock (aka Cartiledge) has posted to YouTube and called "Vanguard Party in Seattle". See many of your favorite Seattle fans in their natural habitat! See [livejournal.com profile] kate_schaefer in a ditch! See Andy Hooper in a fez! Hear [livejournal.com profile] libertango's obituary!

Good family fun. This Cartiledge fellow has a future in video.

Last night I had a visit from c's non-fannish friend, S, and we got to talking about Vanguard, which, as he put it, he's hung out on the edges of a few times. He said, "It's the largest gathering of introverts I've ever seen!"

Guess he's never been to a convention.
